VitaMist Omega (Blue Green Sea Spray) combines omega-3 (linolenic) and omega-6 (linoleic) fatty acids extracted from both spirulina, blue-green algae found in various spots around the globe, and flaxseed, a plant whose cultivation stretches back to ancient Egypt.

Spirulina, natural algae (cyanobacteria) powder, is extremely high in protein, as well as other nutrients. Largely made up of protein and essential amino acids, spirulina also has a high natural iron content and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, as well as omega-6 and omega-9.

Why flaxseed and not fish oil, you ask? Fish and fish oil have long been touted as excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids. The problems with fish oils, however, are twofold. The quantity of omega-3 fatty acids that they offer is less than that of flaxseed oil. This is because fish oil contains roughly equal amounts of omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9. Therefore, fish oil supplements are providing you with an equal mix of the three, despite -6 and -9 not being as beneficial. The second problem with fish oil is that it can expose you to small amounts of mercury. While not a huge risk while eating fish from time to time, taking a fish oil supplement regularly can cause that mercury to build up in your system, with the potential for deadly results. Flaxseed oil, on the other hand, is a perfectly safe alternative, with the added benefit that, like spirulina, it contains a much higher ratio of omega-3 fatty acids than omega-6 and omega-9.
